Equipment / Shop Manager

Thorcon Shotcrete and Shoring is a reputable, Colorado-based Geotechnical Contractor. Our technical team specializes in slope stabilization and design-build projects that include Micro-Piles, Shotcrete/Gunite, Rock Bolts and Ground Anchors on DOT, Federal, Heavy Civil, Commercial and Residential projects.

Established in 2014, Thorcon has seen rapid growth since 2018 – posting increases of 30% plus each year. As Thorcon grows our footprint is spreading – we now operate in six states and counting. 

The Equipment/Shop Manager for Thorcon will oversee the planning and coordination of Thorcon’s Equipment and Shop departments. This person will be tasked with setting and maintaining equipment schedules, equipment repairs prioritization, monitoring service intervals & charges, and equipment logistics.

The Equipment/Shop Manager reports to the Corporate General Manager of Operations and Logistics, and will work closely with the Project Managers, Material Manager, General Superintendent, and Superintendents for each project. This person will supervise Mechanic(s), Shop Assistant(s), and any Field Laborers assisting with shop or yard duties.

Primary Functions:

  • Determine equipment and tooling/setup needs according to the project’s technical details and schedules
  • Coordinate with and support Project Management and Superintendents with equipment needs, reporting, and availability 
  • Manage any equipment repairs to meet project requirements
  • Coordinate the delivery of equipment according to the various projects’ priorities
  • Maintain optimum shop inventory levels to ensure on-time maintenance and repairs
  • Responsible for seeking and researching manufactures, wear parts, and equipment suppliers to achieve the best possible quality, reliability, pricing, and delivery options
  • Establish procedures (SOP) and supervise the annual physical inventory and repair audits
  • Supervise, evaluate, and coach staff members on maintenance management
  • Interface with parts suppliers for planning and forecasting of major repairs, preventive maintenance and rebuilds
  • Maintain relationships and negotiate pricing with equipment vendors
  • Purchase Shop supplies and Equipment Parts according to projects’ needs and forecasting
  • Ensure that the Equipment Management SOP and Shop Management SOP are followed regarding all Equipment purchases & repairs, and shop management

Responsibilities Include:

  • Resolve problems to speed up readiness of equipment
  • Inspect new equipment/parts upon arrival to ensure the correct quality, quantity, and condition
  • Inspect returning equipment/parts from the field to ensure the correct quality, quantity, and condition
  • Monitor and organize inventory of consumable materials in shop 
  • Monitor and organize inventory of maintenance consumables for equipment in shop
  • Place orders in a timely fashion – aiming for timely delivery and competitive pricing
  • Coordinate the movement of equipment between Job Sites, Repair Facilities, and the Shop/Yard
  • Keep timely and accurate records 
  • Responsible for Registering and Renewing all vehicles and equipment Licenses Plates & SMM
  • Responsible for getting the new registrations onto/into the correct equipment 
  • Create new and maintain existing electronic files for each piece of equipment/vehicle
  • Scan all registrations, insurance, repair invoices into appropriate system folders
  • Call in VIN verifications as needed
  • Maintain electronic list of equipment in Spectrum, Sharepoint, and Asignar – adding new equipment as purchased and/or removing old equipment as needed
  • Maintain the Enterprise website with up-to-date mileage and driver changes
  • Monitor and catalog all Equipment installed with GPS, as well as all tools tagged with Asset tracking (QR codes)
  • Provide reporting for all monitored assets across multiple companies for accounting and project tracking needs

Requirements

  • Proven experience as Equipment/Shop Manager or relevant position
  • 3+ years’ experience in a logistics role or related shop experience
  • Familiarity with equipment movement, repair and inventory management 
  • Ability to understand technical specifications of tooling and equipment
  • Ability to lead team members
  • Knowledgeable of forecasting and budgeting
  • Customer service-oriented 
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must be on time to work
  • Proficient in MS Office (especially Excel) and filing systems
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Well-organized with multi-tasking abilities
  • Ability to problem-solve on the spot 
  • High school diploma
  • Understand and follow all company policies 
  • Must pass a drug test

Compensation

Thorcon pays a competitive wage, which depends on experience. The Equipment/Shop Manager position ranges from $60,000 to $80,000 salary, with an incentive compensation bonus program in addition to salary. Thorcon offers great growth potential and opportunities for advancement.
