Rocks bolts are a rock a stabilization technique used primarily to stabilize excavated rock cuts and tunnels. By inserting a threaded rod and a compression system deep into the rock surface, rock bolts and help redistribute the load from the unstable exterior of the rock face to the stronger interior of the rock mass.
A Bit of History
Rock bolts were first used in the mining industry at the end of the 1800s. In the late 40's US and Australia started utilizing rock bolts for tunneling. Today rock bolt technology is still advancing and is being used in a variety of applications.

Installation
Installation is a relatively simple procedure. First, a rock drill will drill at a specific angle and depth. The design of the angle and depths for the bolts in a system are specifically engineered based on the rock quality and the type of excavation. Once a hole is drilled for the anchor, a threaded rod which usually has some sort of compression device is inserted into the hole. Sometimes epoxy is used instead of a compression device to firmly seat the anchor into the rock. Finally, the threaded rod is capped with a base plate and a nut.
Depending on the application, a wire mesh may be attached the ends of the rock bolts to catch the debris. This will be done in instances when falling debris is of particular concern. A rock face next to a highway is a good place to add this extra precaution.
